Carson National Forest Back To Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Angel Fire Chamber of CommerceTaos, NM, July 29, 2011 – Due to recent rains and better fuel moistures, the Carson National Forest will go back to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions beginning at noon Friday, July 29, 2011.

Stage 1 fire restrictions include the following:

  1. No building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, wood or charcoal burning stove. Campfires are allowed in fire grills and grates provided by the Forest Service in developed recreation sites. Gas and propane stoves, lanterns or heating devices are permitted providing such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.
  2. 2. Smoking is allowed only in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all grass and debris.

Some areas do remain closed due to either construction or revegetation work. The Augua Piedra Campground off of US 518 is closed for construction. Forest Road 703 through Amole Canyon and the Tia Maes Trail remains closed for the revegetation in vicinity of the Osha Fire. Cabresto Campgrounds and Cabresto Lake remains off limits to the public until August 31from the junction of Forest Roads 134 and 134A to a point immediately above Cabresto Dam and Reservoir, including trails and roads due to construction activities in preparation for next year’s dam reconstruction.

Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.

The public is welcome to visit, hike, and camp on the Carson National Forest but should follow all Stage 1 Restrictions and additional closures.
