What’s Happening This Summer?

newsBy Jo Mixon

The real question should be “What’s NOT happening this summer?”

May is the month! We’ve packed away our skis and snowboards and unpacked our golf clubs, bicycles, hiking/running shoes and fishing gear. All of our favorite activities are back on the agenda, new events are planned, and even one being resurrected from the past. We cannot tell you how excited we are to be in Angel Fire!

Tonight, Wednesday May 6, 2015, Wheeler Peak Cowboy Fellowship will restart their weekly potluck and worship service at the Community Center. Thursday May 7, 2015, enjoy storytelling by the Moreno Valley High School Spanish Club at the High School or attend Business after Hours at H2 Uptown.

Are you a cyclists? Be it motorcycle or bicycle, Angel Fire is the place to be. The Bike Park opens May 14, 2015, as do all other activities on the mountain. Either bring your own bike and equipment or rent from the Bike Park Bike Shop, The Trailhead, Cottam’s of Angel Fire, or Mountain Sports of Angel Fire.

May 15, 2015, the Angel Fire Fire Department will sponsor a Kids Safety Boot Camp at Angel Fire Fire Department Station 2 then on Saturday May 16, 2015, meet at the Village of Angel Fire for the Annual Spring Clean Day.

The Angel Fire Resort Golf Course is opening May 21, 2015 with a variety of golf tournaments and clinics scheduled throughout the summer. And then May 24-25, 2015 memorial Day Ceremonies will take place at the Vietnam Veterans memorial State Park. Then on Thursday May 28, 2015, Business after Hours will be at the Shuter Library.

Hit the tennis courts, opening June 2, 2015. Check out their webpage to find a list of tennis clinics for all age levels. Maybe you just need to put on your hiking shoes and trek up the mountain. Do you want a group to walk/run with? Meet at Mountain Sports every Thursday morning at 7:30 am and join the Couch to 5k Road Runners group. (Getting into shape can be fun whether you’re a beginner or an expert.) And any of the before mentioned sports stores have the gear you need, including High Country and Winter Sports.

Our high altitude location makes for a great setting for bike races of all types. Look for the GRT Chile Challenge (June 19-20, 2015), Rough Riders 200 Double Century Race (June 27-28, 2015) and many more. You can register to participate in two big endurance races this summer in Angel Fire. On June 13-14, 2015, the Oso High Backcountry New Mexico Cup Enduro Race (bicycles) and August 28-29, 2015, The Ragnar Trail Endurance Race (running). Sign up for the first ever Angel Fire Adventure Marathon, Half Marathon or 5-K to be held on July 4, 2015.

Book a four-wheeler adventure at Angel Fire Excursions or Bobcat Pass, go horseback riding with Roadrunner Tours, or get your adrenaline pumping on the Rio Grande River whitewater rafting with Far Flung Adventures. Not enough yet? Everyone should try sailing across the mountain on the Zipline Tour. Get your body moving every Sunday night starting in June with Ball Room Dance classes taught by Diane Peterson in Elements at the Angel Fire Country Club. Summer is a time to laugh, enjoy, and have fun as you soak up the sunshine or bask in the views!

Do you want a milder adventure? Stick a worm on your hook and cast it into Monte Verde Lake, Eagle Nest Lake, or Cimarron Creek. Streit Fly Fishing will provide guides & equipment or simply book a guided fishing trip on Eagle Nest Lake with Turquoise Trout. Drive down Hwy 434 to feed the Alpacas at Victory Ranch in Mora. Book a painting class at Katherine’s Fine Art or Binford-Bell Studios. On Friday nights in July, enjoy Movies Under the Stars at the base of the mountain at Angel Fire Resort while enjoying free popcorn.Be inspired by Living Labyrinths for Peace how to create your own labyrinth.

Take a day to relax and be pampered. Have a massage at Kathy Dunbar’s Body Mechanics, get your hair and nails done at Studio 434, then wander over to Enchanted Circle Pottery to tour their wood burning kiln. Read the book you checked out at Shuter Library. And to make your summer memories last a lifetime, call Wende Woolley Photography to capture the moments!

The Annual AAFPO Welcome Home Weekend is set to kick off Friday night, June 5, 2015, then on June 13, 2015, get your recycle art on at the first ever Spare Part Art Auction. A much anticipated event is scheduled for June 19-21, 2015, Balloons Over Angel Fire is back! Once again hot air balloons will fill the skies over Angel Fire. June 20, attend 1 Nite 2 Unite Christian Music Festival, followed by the hot-air balloon glow. Habla Tamale will make its debut August 8-9, 2015, with the first ever tamale cook-off festival in New Mexico. And there is much more. This summer promises something for everyone! Don’t miss it!

To keep up with dates and times of all events the entire summer visit www.angelfirechamber.org, www.angelfireresort.com, and www.angelfirefun.com. We all keep running calendars of events. Between the three websites, hopefully we’ll cover everything that is happening. And please forgive me if I’ve missed anything. If you want your events added to our calendars, email manager@angelfirechamber.org. Send flyers in jpg format.

Whatever you choose to do, or if you choose to do everything, be safe, have fun, and breathe in the fresh mountain air! We hope to see you this summer in Angel Fire!

We Need Volunteers For Balloons Over Angel Fire!

Want to get up close with hot air balloons? This year, we have three days of Balloon Ascensions, balloon tethers and a Balloon Glow set for June 19-21, 2015. We are looking for individuals, families, friends and groups that want to volunteer to crew for these balloons. We are also looking for people to help with parking cars at the launch site and other jobs throughout the event.

When: June 19-21, 2015

If you have experience – that’s great! If not, come on out and enjoy the summer mornings and evenings with us and get up close and personal with a hot air balloon! There may be a ride high up in the Moreno Valley for you.

Drop an email to Jimmy Linton at jimmy@angelfirefun.com or call 575-377-6555 and let us know you want to help out. We will have you signed up and partnered with one of our experienced balloon pilots and provide a great time throughout the weekend!

SEE YOU THERE!
