2016 Village Council Forum/Debate

chamber-logoThe Angel Fire Chamber of Commerce is pleased to host the 2016 Village Council Candidate Forum on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Angel Fire Community Center. And we are once again asking for your support. Each candidate will be asked, in random order, 10 questions. These questions will be composed from the questions you want answered. What are the most pressing issues you are concerned about in Angel Fire?

Please send your questions to manager@angelfirechamber.org, no later than Thursday February 9, 2016. All of the questions received will then go before the forum committe, chaired by Chamber President, Wende Woolley. This committee will place the top 10 most asked questions onto the forum agenda.

These individuals filed their candicacy for 2016 Angel Fire Municipal election to be held on March 1, 2016 and have all been invited to participate in this forum.

37th Annual World Championship Shovel Races

shovel-racesSkiing and snowboarding not your thing? Join us for a fun-filled weekend of high-speed shovel racing and Mardi Gras celebrations. The Angel Fire Resort shovel races even made Jettsetter’s list of 11 Craziest Winter Adventures and Men’s Journal as a World Championships You Can Win! Register now to be come part of the 37th Annual World Championship Shovel Races.

If you don’t want to jump on a shovel and race down the mountain, this event is still a must-attend while in Angel Fire! Party like a local and watch the races unfold while you enjoy FREE Red Bull and sip on a few drinks at the cash bar. After the races stick around for live music & the Awards Ceremony in The Village Haus.

EVENT SCHEDULE

Friday, February 5 | Practice & Registration Day

It costs $5 to register for practice runs and that cost will be refunded for registered racers. Registration is open from 12-5 at The Village Haus, after you register and sign a release, practice runs are available until 5:00 pm.

All racers must have a lift ticket or season/membership pass to access lift #2. You can purchase Lift tickets to access lift #2 during registration for $10. Helmets and eye protection are required, and they can be rented or purchased at Slopeside Sports, the base area ski rental shop. Officials will be at the top of the course to assist.

There will also be a mandatory racers meeting at 5 pm in The Village Haus for first-time racers.

Saturday, February 6 | Late Registration & Race Day

Racing starts at 9:30 am. Racers must check in with the Start Official at least 15 minutes prior to their start time.

Awards party in The Village Haus at 5:30 pm.

REGISTRATION

Register online to get your free Shovel Races T-shirt, but register early as T-shirt sizes cannot be guaranteed to those registered after Friday, January 22. Online registration officially closes Thursday, February 4.

Once your online registration is submitted, within a few days an Angel Fire Resort representative will reach out to you to formally complete the registration process.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Racers can only compete in their age category, unless registered in a Pro category (for those ages 18 and older).
  • Production shovels only, no modifieds.
  • All racers must have a lift ticket or season/membership pass to access lift #2.
    • Lift tickets to access lift #2 will be sold at registration for $10.
  • Everyone will be required to sign a release. Releases will be available during registration. Minors will need a parent or guardian present to sign the release.
  • Angel Fire Resort will have a very limited number of shovels for use so it is recommended that all racers bring their own shovels. Helmets and eye protection are required, but will not be supplied by Angel Fire Resort. However, they can be rented or purchased at Slopeside Sports, the base area ski rental shop.
  • You must be wearing a bib to be on-course, with the exception of the Practice Run where a wristband is required.
  • The practice course is $5, but you must sign a release and show your wristband and wear a helmet and eye protection.

Racers must check in with the Start Official at least 15 minutes prior to their start time. All Racers (with the exception of Little Scoops) will be seeded randomly for their first run and seeded by time (slowest time first – fastest time last) for their second run. If a racer is not present for their age category time slot, they will not be allowed to race that run and will be given a DNS, Did Not Start.

RULES

  1. No physical alterations are allowed to the running surface of the grain scoops (shovels) other than the application of wax or similar type substance to the underside or bottom of the scoop. You may adhere tape or other similar materials to the handle of the shovel to make it easier to grip. You may paint the seat of the grain scoop but no traction aiding substance is allowed.
  2. Barging the start gate constitutes a false start. First false start in a heat is a warning, the second false start in a heat is a disqualification.
  3. If a racer is not in contact with their shovel upon crossing the finish line, that racer will receive a DNF (did not finish) for that run. Should a racer lose complete contact with their shovel during a run, they will receive a DNF for that run and will be required to immediately move laterally off the course.
  4. Protests can only be made by the competitor immediately following the completion of their run, before leaving finish area. Protests will only be accepted at the main scoreboard. All protests must include a $20 fee. This fee will be refunded to the competitor if the Judging and Inspection Committee deems the protest valid. If not, the money will not be refunded.

Finish Times: The time elapsed from the start to the finish will be electronically measured and recorded to .001 second when the competitor, sitting in/on the scoop of the shovel passes through the designated finish line.

Ties: The fastest two-run combined time will be the winner.

NMCEA Legislative Conference 2016

meetingI am back in the office (for a few days) after having attended the NMCEA Legislative Conference, New Mexico Chamber Executives Association, last week in Santa Fe and am pleased to tell you that I was seated on the executive board of this state organization while there. The Angel Fire Chamber has a been member of the organization for over 5 years. I will serve as a board member for three years and on the executive board as the secretary/treasurer for 2016. The conference was packed full of meetings and information. We spent all day last Tues. at the roundhouse. Governor Martinez met with us first to explain what is on her call for this short session and why she is asking for certain budget monies, and discussed several bills she would like to see passed.

The three governmental focus items this session are on Public Safety, Economic Development, and Education. The agenda then provided us an hour with each of the following cabinet members:

  • Mr. Scott Darnell, Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the Governor on the subject of 2016 NM Legislative initiatives.
    (He also introduced us to his staff and allowed each if them to detail the work they do on various issues)
  • Cabinet Secretary Mr. Tom Clifford, Finance and Administration Department
  • Cabinet Secretary Mr. Jon Barela, Economic Development Department
  • Cabinet Secretary Mr. Gregory Fouratt, Public Safety Department

The following day we met with:

  • Cabinet Secretary Ms. Monique Jacobson, Children, Youth and Families Department
  • Cabinet Secretary Ms. Hanna Skandera, Public Education Department
  • Cabinet Secretary Dr. Barbara Damron, Higher Education Department

All members of NMCEA in attendance spent the rest of our time discussing what we believed were important points each of our own chambers would support or oppose as a group, on the NMCEA Legislative card. I sent the narrative that was drafted and the card that will be given to the Governor, the House, and the Senate as representative of all of the combined Chambers of New Mexico and the businesses we represent, to our board of directors so they could read and comment. They were charged with supporting or opposing by last Saturday morning.(As the Governor told us the NMCEA is a powerful voice at legislation.)

The card is a short version = support or oppose of budget requests and the list of introduced bills. The narrative is a longer explanation of the card. (If you, as a member of the Angel Fire Chamber of Commerce would like me to email these to you, please let me know.)

Military Winterfest 2016

(Jan. 22, 2016) – Organizers at the 2nd Annual Military Winterfest are seeking volunteers to show off some Angel Fire hospitality. “Our goal is to provide the best possible experience for our veteran, active duty guests and their families,” said Lysa Hopson, Military Winterfest volunteer coordinator. “Our vets and their families have given much to our country, and this festival for them is just one way Angel Fire can say ‘thanks’ for their service.”

Hopson is building a cadre of enthusiastic volunteers who share an interest to giving back to our service members, our veterans and their families. “Whether it’s laying the groundwork for their visit to Angel Fire or assisting during the festival, any help is appreciated,” said Hopson. Volunteers are needed for the following starting February 17 through 22:

  • Booth setup and teardown
  • Registration
  • Greeter
  • Rental Shop Ambassador
  • Ski Guide
  • Snowboard Guide
  • Shoeshoe Guide
  • Ski/Snowboard Race Helper
  • Dog Handler/Helper

Though Hopson has 4-hour blocks of time scheduled for each task, she said “I’d be pleased with as little as an hour of time to as much time as people want to give.” She has created a survey to help match volunteers with the right opportunity for the event. 2016 Legislative Reception

New Mexico Chambers of Commerce, business advocacy organizations and community partners set up booths at the event.
