Udall Update

Lunch Shaming Now Illegal In New Mexico

Earlier this year, New Mexico became the first state in the nation to ban the practice known as “lunch shaming.” We can all be proud of the coalition of state lawmakers and advocates who championed the Hunger-Free Students’ Bill of Rights, which prohibits schools from publicly singling out or punishing students – even withholding regular school lunch – because a parent or guardian hasn’t paid a school meal bill.

But in nearly half of all U.S. school districts, school officials still are allowed to punish students by forcing them to wear wristbands, assigning them chores, and even making a display of taking away a meal from a child after it has been served.

It’s time to ban lunch shaming everywhere, and that’s why I’m leading bipartisan legislation in Congress to prohibit this practice nationwide. We can’t expect our kids to succeed in the classroom when they’re hungry and face public embarrassment at the hands of school officials. And this week, as kids head back to school in New Mexico, I’m again speaking out.

Instead of lifting up all students, lunch shaming accomplishes the exact opposite. Singling out students whose parents are unable to pay stigmatizes the most vulnerable kids. Extra school chores take students away from schoolwork and classmates. And, worst of all, the practice can stand in the way of a child’s only healthy meal of the day.

Ultimately, states and school districts must take the lead. But because they have been slow to act, I believe the federal government should step in and do what it can to prevent this practice. My Anti-Lunch Shaming Act would ban schools nationwide from using public shaming tactics against children by:

  • Explicitly prohibiting schools from forcing kids to wear wristbands or hand stamps, requiring chores, or throwing a child’s meal away because their parent or guardian hasn’t paid a school meal bill; and
  • Requiring schools to direct any communications about meal debt to the parent or guardian, and not to the child.

And because every child who needs a school meal should get one – even if they don’t have the money to pay for it – the bill also would take steps to simplify and improve the process for applying for free and reduced-price lunch.

In the United States, 13 million children live in households struggling with food insecurity; and in New Mexico, it’s nearly one in three. We should be doing everything we can to change that terrible statistic. Let’s put an end to lunch shaming once and for all. And let’s devote our energy to building a future where every child can concentrate on learning – without worrying about his or her next meal.

Cheers,

Tom Udall

Angel Fire Food & Wine Roundup

By Jo Mixon

August 24-27, 2017

Two of my favorite joys in life… Food & Wine! Angel Fire Resort is inviting all of us to experience lots of both this weekend at the FOOD & WINE ROUNDUP. Starting with a VIP Dinner on Thursday evening, this series of events are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, food in your belly, wine and craft beers to taste and the opportunity to kick up your heels. And it promises to educate you on the “How To’s” of barbecue. There are several cooking demonstrations scheduled where you both learn and eat! These include grilling, dutch oven cooking, a mushroom hunt & lunch demo, and a chuck wagon breakfast. Also included in the weekend events are Wine & Spirits tastings, Reserve Tastings, and a Grand Tasting where it all comes together in one location. Then next weekend you can go back to your own grill equipped to boast a meaner barbecue! Plus you will be better educated as to which wine, beer or spirits to serve with the foods you cook… Winning in all categories!

For the Food and Wine Roundup, the Resort is bringing in guest celebrity chefs from east and west. Kicking it off at 9:30 am on Friday, August 25, is Meathead Goldwyn, author of NY bestseller book, “The Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling”. He will demonstrate how to prep meats for the smoker and grill.

I spoke with Meathead last Friday. He shared with me that he has his Master’s in Art & Technology. He considers himself a culinary artist, well versed in the science of what happens when “heat hits meat”. He told me there is a science to the art of grilling and the temporal arts are similar to cooking. “To be an artist you must first be a craftsman but you must understand the science behind it”, said Meathead. He also served as Wine Critic for the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune for many years. He says, “I’ve been eating and drinking all my life!” He is looking forward to his visit to New Mexico to eat an authentic green chile cheeseburger and to check out the art scene in Santa Fe before he heads up the mountain to Angel Fire.

At 11:30 am on Friday morning August 25, after his demonstration Meathead will join celebrity guest chef from California, Harry Soo, famous for “Slap Yo’ Daddy Barbecue”. Together they will slow-cook a barbecue lunch for you to savor on the deck of the Zia Bar, located on the mid-level, in the base area of the Angel Fire Ski Resort, just outside of the Village Haus. Yum!

Following lunch, west coast favorite pit master, Harry Soo will take over, demonstrating how to prepare his favorite cuts of Kyzer Farm prime pork. Enjoy lunch before you learn the art of transitioning from grill to plate!

This is just for starters! There is something happening all day on each of the days. For a more detailed list of the schedule of events they are all listed below. Get your tickets now, they are selling out fast.

2017 Art & Farmer’s Market Update

For the second summer, one of the absolute best new venues in Angel Fire is the Sunday Art + Farmer’s Market in Frontier Park. It is so nice to experience the sites and smells and sounds of a fresh outdoor market. Added are many other organic treats, local and regional artisans, a kid’s zone, made to order foods, and music to shop by. The atmosphere is enticing, as well as engaging. It gives all who participate the opportunity to connect with art, music, and food!

This year the Angel Fire Resort has hired Jennifer Helsel to coordinate all that is edible at the market. She also coordinates the Saturday Taos Farmers Market and has run a few in Albuquerque. The original concept of this weekly Farmer’s Market is to allow local and regional farmers a place to sell their goods in Angel Fire, as if they were on the side of the road, but in a more convenient spot and where consumers would know they would be selling, on a consistent schedule.

The cornerstone produce vendor is Jerry Neal. He is based out of Chama, New Mexico. Jerry brings in freshly picked produce from various farmers in New Mexico and Colorado, around the Palisades and Grand Junction area. His cantaloupes and watermelons are from Pecos and Midland Texas. (I was excited to see yellow meated watermelons! They are so sweet and have that melt in your mouth goodness!) Jerry said he had worked construction for years in the blistering heat of Texas, when his daughter suggested he come to New Mexico where she lived, to cool down and set up a side of the road watermelon stand. So that is exactly what he did. The first truck load he brought sold out in a matter of hours. He still sells out of his stand, close to Farmington, NM and has added more fruits and vegetables and has great success selling in Angel Fire.

You’ll also find many other fresh food products including organic eggs, gluten free breads, coffee cakes, cookies, sconces, cupcakes, jellies and jams and cheeses, fresh beef and of course fresh roasted green chiles.

This year the Resort has teamed up with Art Up Northern New Mexico to sponsor and coordinate all things art or not edible, with a large scale of homemade products. Your shopping experience may include skincare products that are made from the vendor’s own herb and flower gardens, homemade doggie treats, massage by the minute, fresh flowers, pottery, jewelry, handbags, and art made from wood, metal, oils, watercolor, fabric, pinecones and/or glass.

Photos courtesy of Jo Mixon and the Angel Fire Resort.

Then after you load up on fruits and vegetables, fresh roasted Hatch green chiles and other wonderful items for the week, wander over to the Kids Zone for free face painting and or relax on the giant beanbag chairs! You will be delighted to know all ages are welcome to get their faces painted. The face painters use vegan non-toxic water soluble hypo allergenic paint. Cassandra, head face painter, said, “It is the happiest paint in the world! We use only happy paint.” Well that makes me happy! And now included at the Art & Farmer’s Market is free yoga at 11:00 am. That makes me happy, too.

There are only 3 Sundays left to shop and enjoy the Art + Farmer’s Market, so make plans to attend. If you have any questions or would like to set up a booth and become part of this awesome Sunday market, there is plenty of room for you! Food vendors visit http://www.angelfirecoolsummer.com/market/, all other vendors visit http://artup-nnm.org/programs/art-farmers-market/ to fill out an application.

Maybe I’ll see you there!
