Eagle Nest Fireworks Postponed

FireworksDuring the strategic planning session for the annual 4th of July Fireworks over Eagle Nest Lake sponsored by the Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce, it was determined to postpone the 2011 4th of July Fireworks because of extreme fire danger. The overriding concern is for the safety of our visitors, residents and neighboring communities. Those attending the planning session included representatives of the Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce, Village of Eagle Nest, Eagle Nest Volunteer Fire Department, Moreno Valley Fire Department, Angel Fire Fire Department, Colfax County Sheriff’s Department, NM State Parks, and several concerned citizens. After viewing a slide show showing conditions at the fireworks staging area and extensive discussion concerning the problems/hazards created by drawing possibly thousands of spectators, the decision was unanimous – discharging fireworks under the present extremely dry conditions would pose unreasonable danger to property and life. There remains an extreme fire danger throughout the Moreno Valley, and the threat of wildfire will remain extremely high until significant rainfall arrives.

The other festivities to include the annual Fireman’s Barbeque, the Parade at 2:00 pm, the Native American Expo, Vendors in the Park, The Junior Chamber Fair and Dance, the Kite Festival at the Eagle Nest Lake State Park will all continue and everyone is invited.

Eagle Nest Ice Fishing Postponed

The Eagle Nest Ice Fishing Tournament has been, at best postponed, and at worst canceled due to the lack of ice thickness. We must have at least 9 inches and we are at about 7 inches. This could also affect our Southwest Snowkite Festival which requires snow and ice. Stay tuned.

New Event In Eagle Nest!

Southwest Snowkite Festival In Eagle Nest!

As many of you know, we are in the planning stages of our newest event, the Southwest Snowkite event. It will be held on February 4, 5, 6, 2011 at the EN Lake State Park (hopefully, with the lake frozen over). We are working with Game & Fish and the State Parks Folks to get permission to use the lake. If you are not familiar with snowkiting, it’s a relatively new “extreme sport” that is all the rage across the U.S. Our area is perfect for it as it requires open terrain and good wind. Basically they harness you into a huge kite that you can steer, put a snowboard or skis on your feet and you can sail around in the air or on the ground. Individually its fun, but it also can become an annual competition with races, etc. Please take a look at what they do in Utah! The gentlemen, from Santa Fe, that will co-host this event with the chamber are certified instructors. They will provide demonstrations, lessons, and they tell us that other snowkiters will come to the event from around the country. They love to travel to new locations. As this event grows annually, it could become a significant source of visitors to Eagle Nest.
