Enchanted Circle Pottery Says, “Jo Knows Jo”, Do You?

Enchanted Circle PotteryBy Jo Mixon

This week our featured “I Know Jo” business of the week is Enchanted Circle Pottery located in Taos Canyon.

Owned and operated by Kevin and Jo Anne DeKeuster, this home studio and gallery beacons to all who travel through the Taos Canyon. Walking into the work studio at Enchanted Circle Pottery, the first thing Jo pointed out to me was a crack in the concrete floor. She told me that Kevin says it is THE most important feature. It cracked in the exact right spot to divide his side from her side so that they work side by side yet have their own space. On Kevin’s side is the potters wheel. Sitting in front of a window with a spectacular view he begins his artwork on the wheel. He then pulls and tugs it into the creative shapes he desires. Jo on the other side, doesn’t use a wheel. She sketches a pattern, makes a template, then rolls out the clay as if it were fabric to design her textured pieces. She focuses on form, design, and composition. Of their combined masterpieces, Kevin is the round and Jo is the flat, or so they told me with a humoristic smile and together they make a variety of functional and sculptural pieces steeped in originality and style.

At this point both Kevin and Jo turn their pieces over to their unique wood burning kiln to be greatly influenced and enhanced by the flames and the ash. The one of a kind iridescent coloring caused by this ancient Japanese form of firing is incredibly beautiful. Using two sizes of wood, they fire up the kiln six times a year for 40 hours at a time. The kiln reaches intensely high temperatures of 2400 degrees, causing the ash to melt into a glaze. The kiln must be monitored continually during the firing so that each of the elements involved are exact. The end product being fabulously functional works of art that are completely safe for the dishwasher, microwave, and oven.

I was extremely impressed!

Both Kevin and Jo have been invited to exhibit their work throughout the United States and internationally in a variety of juried and invitational shows. Voted the Official Best Art Gallery and Studio of New Mexico 2011, Enchanted Circle Pottery is a gallery you should not miss. They invite you to come visit, come watch, and come buy!

Open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Enchanted Circle Pottery is located at 26871 E. Hwy 64 between Angel Fire and Taos. Give them a call them at 575-737-9640 today!

Volunteers Desperately Needed!

Stray HeartsMuch can be done to better the life of the animals we shelter with the generous help of regular volunteers. There are currently over 100 dogs in the shelter.

Dog Walkers

It’s as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. Walking a dog is not just for physical exercise, but essential to the well- being of its mental health. Stray Hearts is dependent upon its volunteer team of Dog Walkers to ensure that all our animals have human contact, physical exercise, and mental stimulation on a regular basis. Dog walking will provide you with a very flexible opportunity to help the dogs and yourself! Beginner Dog Walker training is provided to all dog walkers, and Advanced Dog Walking training is offered as well.

Cat Socialization

Obviously, cats do not need walking – however, for a cat to stay healthy and adoptable, it needs human interaction. As cats can be aloof, it is important that they are comfortable with human contact. By spending time with the cats and kittens, you will be instrumental in helping them get a forever home. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved your child involved, as well.

IT’S EASY TO GET INVOLVED!

You can find out more about volunteer opportunities at Stray Hearts. Please visit our website at www.strayhearts.org (you can download an application) or call the volunteer coordinator at 575-758-2981 for more information. You’re also welcome to visit the shelter between the hours of 11:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except Sunday.

Red River Jeep Rental Says, “I Know Jo”, Do You?

Red River Jeep RentalBy Jo Mixon

This week our featured I Know Jo business is Red River Jeep Rental.

Nestled behind the Community House in downtown Red River on Independence Trail, you’ll find Red River Jeep Rentals working out of the Aspen Lodge. This is the 2nd season of providing fabulous family fun for owners Jason and Zaida Dean along with their English Bulldog, Roxie. Sharing in the responsibilities are Jason’s nephew Ryan Reacer and wife Jenny. Having lived in Red River in his childhood and remembering the fun he had jeepin’ up to Goose Lake and over to Greenie, Jason decided a few years ago to start buying jeeps. He’d noticed there weren’t too many other outfits in the area and since he is a mechanic by trade, his idea was that he could maintain the jeeps, rent them out, and be able to play a little too. Having already owned the Aspen Lodge, it seemed natural for him to start his Jeep Rental on the premise. He now owns a fleet of nine Jeep Wranglers and Jeep Cherokees and opens for business June 15th through October 15th each year.

To rent a jeep you will need a valid Drivers License and current auto insurance, and they prefer you reserve your jeeps online at www.redriverjeeprental.com. I arrived to a line of folks patiently waiting to be checked in and handed the keys! When it was my turn Ryan placed me in the yellow jeep, equipped me with a map of over 200 miles of trails and told me to call if I broke down! I realized quickly that my desire for adventure was going to be met today! So I took a deep breath, tightened my seat belt, and stepped on the gas, Whoo-Hoo!

If you have a hunger to explore the off road rough mountain terrain, while experiencing the beauty of the scenic views, lakes, ghost towns and wildlife, get online and make a reservation with Red River Jeep Rental. I guarantee you will not be disappointed! The team at Red River Jeep Rentals stressed to me that they truly are a family oriented business and they really want their guests to enjoy the mountains in a way that will make their visit extra exciting.

For more information check out their website or call 866-644-6751. Roxie will be waiting for you!

Eva Up For Adoption

EvaEva, the beautiful kitty needs a forever home. Her loving owner, only 52, died of cancer June 30. She did NOT want her Eva to go to the Shelter. Eva is 5 years old, spayed, and loves a garden to sit in peacefully. She has not been around other animals, as far as is known. She is healthy.

I’ve attached four pictures of her. Please help find her a forever home by August 11, when the lady’s family will arrive to take her belongings. Please forward this to people you know who love cats, and let me know what I can/should do to help find her a home by August 11.

Please contact 575-737-9762 or mll@marylaneleslie.com.
